The IP Code, Ingress Protection Rating, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in mechanical casings and with electrical enclosures.
IP 54
IP | Protection | Example |
0 | No Protection | Non protected |
1 |
Full penetration of 50mm diameter sphere allowed. Contact with hazardous parts is not permitted. |
Back of hand |
2 |
Full penetration of 12.5mm diameter sphere not allowed. The test finger shall have ample clearance from hazardous parts. |
Finger |
3 | A 2.5mm diameter probe shall not penetrate. | Tool |
4 | A 1mm diameter probe shall not penetrate. | Cable |
5 | Limited ingress of dust permitted (no harmful deposit). | Cable |
6 | Totally protected against ingress of dust | Cable |
IP | Protection | Example |
0 | No Protection | Non protected |
1 | Vertically falling drops of liquid. | Vertical dripping |
2 | Vertically falling droplets of water with the enclosure tilted 15 degrees from the vertical | Driving rain |
3 |
Protection against spray to 60 degrees from the vertical. Limited ingress acceptable. |
Limited spraying |
4 |
Protected against water splashed from all directions. Limited ingress acceptable. |
Splashing from all directions |
5 |
Protected against low pressure water jets from all angles. Limited ingress acceptable. |
Hosing jets from all directions |
6 |
Protection from strong jets of water (for use on ship decks). Limited ingress acceptable. |
Strong jets from all directions |
7 | Protected against immersion between 15cm and 1m | Temporary immersion |
8 | Protected against long periods of immersion under pressure. | Continuous immersion |
